WAKATOBI NATIONAL PARK
Wakatobi National Park is a marine
national park in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. The
name of Wakatobi is an acronym of the four main Islands :
Wangi-wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, and Binongko. Since 2005 the park is listed as a tentative World
Heritage Site.
Wakatobi has a potential marine natural
resources of high value both kind and unique, with amazing underwater panorama.
In general, the marine waters have configurations ranging from flat to sloping
towards the sea, and there are some areas that steep waters. The depth of the water are varies,
the deepest part reaches 1,044 meters with bottom waters mostly sandy and rocky.
The underwater biodiversity of
Wakatobi is claimed to be higher than that of the Caribbean and Egypt,
currently known as the world’s top diving centers. Around 90 percent of the
globe’s 850 coral species or 750 species found in Wakatobi..
There
are also leaf corals, presenting attractive formations at a depth of 12 meters.
Small fish such as cardinal and damsel fish are swimming around them, while
hundreds of yellowback fusilier are moving in a group near the surface.
Then, this island has been named as
a "paradise under the sea" at the eastern tip of Indonesia.
